This chapter discusses pulp and paper waste from different unit operations. Traditional methods were ineffective in extracting the recalcitrant material, hence there is a need for pretreatment of pulp and paper waste to solubilize and use sludge solids. The use of pulp and paper waste in biocomposites, either as a filler or as a fiber, increases the properties of biocomposites. As a result, some environmental issues have been minimized. The preparation of biocomposites is often noted as being environmentally friendly because no secondary contaminants are generated. Therefore, natural fillers are desirable as reinforcements in engineering polymer systems because of their variety, much higher strength per unit weight than most inorganic fillers, lower density, and biodegradable design.

It also looked at the current global plastic landscape and the state of the art of certain bio-based biodegradable plastics that have been studied in order to gain a better understanding of the subject, suggest alternatives, identify areas for more analysis, and contribute to a nascent bioplastics manufacturing initiative. Waste management infrastructure and facilities in low- and middle-income countries, where the majority of poorly treated plastic waste is made, should be strengthened, according to the study. Furthermore, investments in the manufacture of plastics outnumber those in the disposal of plastic waste, resulting in a lower rate of plastic waste capture. Methods such as the recycling rates, reclaiming plastic waste from the environment, enacting restrictions, and banning problematic plastics are being used to reduce the negative impact of fossil-based plastics. Finally, when they have been shown to decrease landfilling and littering, increase recycling rates, build opportunities, and extend waste disposal programs, new efficient systems can be seen as add-ons to plastic waste management.

There is growing interest amongst scientific community in a heterogeneous group of hydrophilic plant alkaloids like polyhydroxylated monocyclic piperidine, pyrrolidine and bicyclic indolizidine, pyrrolizidine, quinolizidine and nortropane owing to their potential biological activities. These alkaloids have been given various generic names e.g. azasugars, iminosugars, polyhydroxy alkaloids, aminosugars etc. So, azasugars are polyhydroxylated alkaloids in which the endocyclic oxygen atom of the sugar ring is replaced with the basic nitrogen. Mere this atomic substitution confers these compounds with the ability to mimic sugars and inhibit various carbohydrate processing enzymes; most significantly the glycosidases (glycoside hydrolases) which are intimately involved in a huge array of biological functions. The present book described the natural occurrence of piperidine homoazasugars, pyrrolidine homoazasugars, bicyclic diazasugars and 1-azasugars. The synthetic aspects of these azasugars using a number of methodologies including chemo-enzymatic methods have discussed. The structural basis for the specificity of glycosidase inhibition and biological application is also described.
