University of Chittagong Policy on Student-Led Society Engagement with Sustainability

 

I. Purpose

This policy aims to promote and support the formation and management of student-led initiatives and societies that contribute to sustainability at the University of Chittagong. It is intended to empower students to actively participate in the university's sustainability efforts through innovative projects, awareness campaigns, and community involvement.

 

II. Scope

This policy applies to all student-led groups, clubs, societies, and organizations that operate under the University of Chittagong and focus on environmental sustainability.

 

III. Policy Objectives

  1. To support the formation and operation of student-led societies focusing on sustainability.
  2. To integrate student-led sustainability initiatives into the broader university sustainability goals.
  3. To provide a framework for funding, mentoring, and supporting student-led sustainability projects.
  4. To encourage interdisciplinary collaboration among students and between students and faculty on sustainability issues.
  5. To enhance the visibility and impact of student-led sustainability efforts within and beyond the university community.

 

IV. Definitions

Sustainability: Actions and policies that meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs, particularly concerning environmental protection, social development, and economic development.

Student-Led Societies: Groups or organizations initiated and governed by students at the University of Chittagong that focus on specific themes or activities, including sustainability.

 

V. Policy Statements and Strategies

  1.      Establishment and Recognition of Societies:

        Encourage students to establish societies focused on various aspects of sustainability, such as conservation, renewable energy, waste reduction, and sustainable agriculture.

        Provide a clear and streamlined process for officially recognizing these societies, facilitating access to university resources.

        Formation of rules for the membership and procedure for the selection and tenure of the executive committee of these societies

        Setting up procedures for their formal enlistment at the University and providing them space on the University’s website to coordinate their activities

        Setting guidelines on the formation of social media groups and the administration thereof

  1.      Support and Funding:

        Offer grants, awards, and funding opportunities specifically designated for sustainability projects led by student societies.

        Provide logistical support, including access to campus facilities and administrative assistance.

  1.       Collaboration and Mentorship:

        Facilitate partnerships between student societies and the University's academic departments to enhance educational and practical experiences related to sustainability.

        Connect student groups with external organizations and communities to expand the impact of their projects.

  1.      Training and Resources:

        Organize workshops, seminars, and training sessions to equip students with the skills to lead effective sustainability initiatives.

        Provide access to sustainability literature, tools, and experts to inform and enhance student projects.

  1.       Communication and Reporting:

        Require student societies to report annually on their activities and achievements, promoting transparency and accountability.

        Highlight successful initiatives through university publications, websites, and events to inspire broader community engagement and recognition.

 

VI. Compliance and Monitoring

         Establish guidelines that student societies must follow to ensure their activities align with university sustainability policies and standards.

         Monitor the activities of student-led societies to ensure compliance and assess their initiatives' impact on campus sustainability goals.

 

VII. Review and Amendment

         Review this policy annually to adapt to evolving sustainability challenges and opportunities and incorporate student and faculty feedback.

         Amend this policy in consultation with key stakeholders, including representatives from student societies, faculty, and the university's sustainability office.
